Khaosan Road has made its name as the refuge for foreign backpackers and travellers on a budget. When I learned Khao Cooking School was in the middle of the road, I was skeptical because it is difficult to relate Khaosan Road with ‘authentic Thai’ anything. What I found though was a culinarily deep, personally connecting and very Thai experience.

Khao Cooking School is run by a mother and daughter team, Ajarn Kobkaew and Khun Ning. Ajarn Kobkaew was a professor at the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, a school known for its hospitality and culinary departments. Khun Ning started out in hotel management but lured into Thai cooking. Now she runs the school with her mother.

Restaurateurs and Cooks as Students

Several of Khao Cooking School students went on to open restaurants. While we’re there, one of the students was planning to open a restaurant with his family. Bo of Bo.lan Restaurant took classes with Professor Kobkaew prior to open Bo.lan.

In the Kitchen With Your Thai Mother

At Khao Cooking School, what you get is learning how to cook like you would in a kitchen with your Thai mother. Professor Kobkaew is not just your regular Thai mother, but a food instructor who has has taught cooking classes at Suan Dusit Rajabhat University and is a regular TV guest on a Thai cooking show.

The Class

The class was not heavily structured nor was it rushed. When we were there we found an almost 1 to 1 ratio of teacher to student. Professor Kobkaew asks you to sniff and taste the curry paste and gives her opinion. You taste a spoon of curry and critique it. She was warm and funny, not a bit egotistical.

You can select 3 dishes at 1,500 baht per person. Each class runs 3 hours and they offer 2 classes daily, morning or afternoon. The dish selections are popular Thai dishes at Thai restaurants outside of Thailand.

If you are a food professional, they offer Professional Cooking Classes. You can select a la carte of dishes with prices from 1,000 baht per dish or a set of dishes for 3000 baht. Included in the list of dishes offered are more difficult or elaborate and popular among Thais. They also offer a market tour.

The dishes are taught and prepared as if you would be cooking for your Thai mother, super authentic. Students are taught to understand the fundamental principles of Thai cooking; tasting, texture, appearance and fragrance. The school believes in using the best, natural ingredients. One of the instructors, Juicy or JC also teaches students how to plate the dishes artistically.

Our Take

Even though the location of the school is not what you'd expect for a quality Thai cooking school, what Khao Cooking School has to offer its student more than makes up for it. The school scores high in our book; with the quality of the instructors, the class, the food and the price, this school can’t be beat. We particularly like the Thai teaching style and the balance of professionalism and hospitality.
